2 Ways to help improve Google Search Experience.

February 15th, 2011 by Rohit Nellipudi | 1 Comment | Filed in Google

We all know that the quality of Google search results is deteriorating day by day. Many smart guys have conquered the Google page ranking algorithm to get their low-content or spam websites listed on the front page of the search results. They benefit by routing more traffic to their sites and thus more advertising revenue.

The rising complaints about the bad quality of the results has given rise to many debates about the fall of Google in the search engine space. Under deep pressure from all quarters, Google has to counter content-farms and spam-rich article submission websites which throw up random and unrelated posts from their domains for any keywords in your search.

Now , Google is ready to crack the whip on those websites. In the process, Google can’t help but take the help of ‘US’, the users. So, you can help Google in the mission by installing few extensions in your chrome browser. Let me tell you in brief about those 2 extensions(note that these extensions are meant for Google Chrome web-browser only).

1.Google Webspam report: This extension adds a ‘report spam’ link below every search result and if you find a spammy result just press that link and report that to Google. But it puzzled me that this link is not available under every result. Download the extension here

2.Personal blocklist : This can allow you to block results from certain domains. This can help you in two ways:

  • If you don’t want to see results from certain sites like say ‘Wikipedia’, you can just click ‘Block en.Wikipedia.org’ link under the result ( shown in screenshot). This can help you make a quick scan of the results automatically blocking results from the sites you choose.
  • These sites will also be reviewed by Google and if your block looks reasonable, it may reduce the importance or black-list that particular site so that pages from that domain won’t trouble anyone anymore, there by making the search-experience better.

You can also view your blocked list anytime and modify it by clicking on the icon on the top right corner of your chrome browser. Download the extension here.

Add these 2 extensions to your Chrome browser and help fight for a better Google Search !.

Google’s “Unexplained phenomenon” logo

September 5th, 2009 by Rohit Nellipudi | 2 Comments | Filed in Google

Google homepage was adored on Friday by a strange and equally stimulating logo shown below.

As you should see, the doodle depicts that an ‘O’ is being taken away by an unidentified flying object(UFO). The logo image is fittingly named “Unexplained phenomenon”. Clicking the image will take you to a list of Google web results on ‘Unexplained phenomenon”.

There’s a funny bit of creativity attached to the logo as well as it’s URL has a missing ‘O’ as well. Here’s the url of the image: “http://www.google.com/logos/go_gle.gif”.

Google would soon be #1 website on Alexa !!.

January 31st, 2009 by Rohit Nellipudi | 1 Comment | Filed in Google

Google , the World’s most used search engine is set to become the site that receives the heaviest traffic, according to Alexa.

Alexa, the Web Information Company, announced on it’s blog that Yahoo’s till to date dominant position at the top would soon be in danger.

Google crossed Yahoo for the first time on January 5th but couldn’t maintain the lead. This could be because of the indifferent volumes of searches happening on Google, varying throughout the week.

But since 19th January,Google maintained the top position and if it continues to do so for another 80 days,it would takeover the 3-month average rank of #1.

January 26th, 2009 by Rohit Nellipudi | No Comments | Filed in Google

Google changed it favicon once again which makes it a second one in 7 months. The last time Google updated it’s favicon was in June,2008.

Since rolling out that simple purple ‘g’ed favicon last year,Google has received tremendous response in terms of Favicon designs. The new design is inspired by designs submitted by André Resende,Hadi Onur Demirsoy, Lucian E. Marin and Yusuf Sevgen.

The new favicon retains the small g which is painted white on a multi-color background. The background is filled with colors Blue,Green,Red and Yellow which are the colors you see on the regular Google logo.

Google employees must have got inspired to U.S President’s ‘change’ message !!….:)

Google pagerank update:Can’t fool Google too long !!.

September 28th, 2008 by Rohit Nellipudi | 4 Comments | Filed in Google

Google,in an unusual way,has updated pageranks of websites twice in two months. The last PR update was in mid july,so one really expected the next update this early.

This seems to put an end to people’s perception about period between PR updates.Google needed to break the jinx as a fixed frequency of updates allowed page rank pirates to build links just before an update. This in turn, affected the quality of search engine results driving Googlers to spam sites. Now,Google can curb these activities with a change in frequency of their updates.

In addition to that,Google also rectified mistakes during the last update when they failed to discover some backlinks.I was a victim of their mistake but,at present everything is perfect. Now Sitegorge,on it’s new domain enjoys a PR-1 !!.
