Discount Coupon for books on Homeshop18(July 2012)

July 5th, 2012 by Rohit Nellipudi | No Comments | Filed in Internet

Following a break in June, Homeshop18, came up with a good offer for book lovers. Customers can get a fair Rs 100 waived off their bill amount if the value is above 600. For example, you add 3 books to your cart which in total would cost you Rs 601, you would only have to pay Rs 501 against your order.

Homeshop18, one of the e-commerce giants, is slowly but surely establishing itself as a good e-shopping site. The prices of products, books in particular, are amazingly low. And add this additional discount, you would be getting your favorite books very cheap-cheaper than any other e-commerce site. This offer would be a great one for students whose text books usually quote at higher hundreds.

All you need to do is enter the code ‘GCDF321NF4UA’ in the “Gift Coupon Number” box and complete the transaction either by paying upfront and opting for Cash-on-delivery. Trust me, their COD process is very fair and they even take COD for remote locations(I live in one).

With such low prices on books, which no other site is able to offer, I wonder how Homeshop18 manages to generate profits. Anyways, customers are always happy.

Gmail internet ads targeted poorly

July 4th, 2012 by Rohit Nellipudi | No Comments | Filed in Internet

It’s definitely surprising to see Gmail ads asking you to try the famed email service, that too after being a regular user.

Google, which uses many advanced techniques to track users just to know their ad-preferences might have failed on this. Me being a loyal user of Gmail for 4 years now, wouldn’t need an ad to beg me to join Gmail. This ads are to be sensibly aimed at non-Gmail users. A correction would pop-in anytime soon.

Desperation efforts from Yahoo – an interesting contest.

June 2nd, 2011 by Rohit Nellipudi | No Comments | Filed in Internet

Yahoo, in it’s quest to regain the top position among web-services has come up with a unique offer. In what seems a desperation effort, Yahoo promises to provide $1460 in coupons payable for coffee at an yet un-announced coffee retailer for the winners of the contest.

The contest, open only for 18+ U.S users , requires them to use Yahoo services like Yahoo homepage (Yahoo.com), Yahoo Mail, or Yahoo Mobile . But before that, the users need to register their email address at http://www.yahooperfectmorning.com and then make sure they use Yahoo services for the next week at least for a little time. Your entry would then get cleared for a draw.

Starting June 3, the contest runs for 7 weeks which ends on July 15. 7 winners are to be selected every week among the participants.

Yahoo, once the top most visited site, now faces stiff competition from services of Google followed by Microsoft. This effort can atleast win back some loyal users to Yahoo impressed by the improved interface.

Chatroulette :Video/text chat with strangers around the world

March 11th, 2011 by Rohit Nellipudi | 4 Comments | Filed in Internet

Chatroulette is an interesting service, I came across recently. It is one among the many services that boast of providing face-to-face video chat with strangers around the World. It stands out among the herd of such services, as it has the simplest interface around and doesn’t ask for any login-credentials.

Note : Make sure you have the Adobe Flash Player installed on your PC. And Of course, you need a webcam to video-chat.
To meet some strangers, all you have to do is :
  • Head over to Chatroulette.com
  • Allow the application to access your webcam and then click “Scan” button. That’s it. You are ready to talk to some strangers around the World.
The application connects users to other users, randomly who are using the application at the same time. You are also provided with a chat-box, in case you want to text-chat. You can also drag the flash stream to any place on your screen with your mouse.
If you are not interested in chatting with a particular user after being connected to him/her , you can always press the ‘Next’ button. You will be connected with another random user, if your partner skips you.
Most of the users of this service are from United States (U.S) and Europe, so the probability of coming across people from these areas is high. And finally, trust me, this service is very addictive.

See screenshots of torrent files(videos) before you download.

February 13th, 2011 by Rohit Nellipudi | 2 Comments | Filed in Internet

Many of us prefer downloading free music or movies through torrents. The flexibility to pause/start the downloads anytime and to adjust the speed of downloading coupled with the ability to download multiple files simultaneously makes this mode of downloading the most popular one.

But there is one problem facing the people who download videos or movies – lack of screenshots. You never know what kind of videos you are downloading- whether they are of HD quality or of low quality. After all, if the video file you downloaded turns out to be of very bad quality, you feel bad due to loss of time and resource.

Just in case you hoped something can help you, read on. Take the help of torrent search engine sites like 1337x.org (Personal favorite), monova.org, extratorrent.com to solve the problem. Do a query for the files you want to download on the above mentioned sites and if the torrent files are available, you can take a look at the screenshots of the video too. Now, if you are satisfied with the quality of the video, you can continue to download the torrent file. Can’t get better , I guess.

If you know about any other services that allow you to see the screenshots of torrent files, let us know through the comments.

Windows 7 OS is the most searched torrent

December 28th, 2010 by Rohit Nellipudi | 6 Comments | Filed in Internet

Windows 7 , the successful operating system from the basket of Windows became the most desirable piece of software on the internet. The OS software, released towards the end of 2009 for retail use was the most searched on Kickasstorrents website in the year 2010.

At a time when many popular sites like Google, Bing etc., bring out the top searches of the year,it is quite interesting that Kickasstorrents also followed the path. The site, which is among the top 10 torrent search engines has revealed the search statistics on it’s site dominated by movies, games.
Considering the success of the OS added to it’s freshness, this fact shouldn’t be a surprise. It’s the only software appearing in the top 20 and it lists at 20th position.

Wolfram|Alpha : A Google Killer ?

May 15th, 2009 by Rohit Nellipudi | No Comments | Filed in Internet

The World would soon see a refreshing new innovative search engine. This could be real god news for the netizens who are bored of their routine regular searches on Google,Yahoo.

Designed and developed by famous mathematician Stephen Wolfram, this revolutionary search engine named “Wolfram|Alpha” is tipped to become a “Google killer“.Well, we have heard of many pre launch “Google killers” but none realized their challenge post-launch.We need to wait till the 18th of May to see if this realizes it’s challenge to reduce the importance of Googling in out lives.

The main idea in launching this search engine is to bring revolutionary changes in the way we perform our seaches on a search engine.Contrary to the Google searches where some hundreds of thousands of results come up on a query,a query on Wolfram Alpha first commands it’s algorithm to understand it deeply. Then, according to the developers, the algorithm outputs an appropriate answer from it’s expertly developed database.Read a detailed explanation by Stephen Wolfram and more about his other projects here.

Well, the description looks quite interesting but we need to wait to get a hands-on on the search engine and experience it in first person.Make sure you head over to Wolfram|Alpha soon.

Statbrain : Count the number of visits to any site

November 8th, 2008 by Rohit Nellipudi | 4 Comments | Filed in Internet

Here’s one more tool that can help you to measure the audience of a site.

StatBrain is another web stats tool adding to the list of Google Trends,Alexa,Compete and Quantcast, which can tell you the daily number of visits to a site.

Statbrain uses the Alexa rank of a website in coming up with the results. The results are quite inaccurate, probably because of their algorithm which uses inaccurate Alexa ranks. But,they know they might be wrong so you can send them instant feedback if you know the actual number of visits to the site.

When checked for stats of a site,Statbrain also displays information like number of Google,Yahoo AllTheWeb, AltaVista backlinks and location of host in addition to the Alexa rank.

The stats, though inaccurate, can be used to get a rough estimate of a site if you are looking to advertise on it.

Send an SMS from Gtalk to any mobile in the World

November 3rd, 2008 by Rohit Nellipudi | 2 Comments | Filed in Internet

Now,here’s a simple way to send an SMS from GTalk to your buddies anywhere in the World.

Login to your Gtalk account and click ‘add a contact’ button. Now add a contact like ‘countrycodemobilenumber@chikkatalk.com’ and click finish.

For an example, for a phone number in India the contact would be like ’91xxxxxxxxxx@chikkatalk.com’(91 is India’s country code).

Once you are done with adding the number, you see that mobile number among your online buddies. Now just type in a message and it gets delivered to the receiver instantly.

How it works?:

This free SMS through Gtalk is possible because of a minor integration of Gtalk with Chikka,a web based messenger. When you add a contact(as stated above),Chikka automatically creates an account for that number and allows you to send an SMS.

Restrictions:

Well, this service is not without any restrictions. You can effortlessly send the first 3 SMSs’ to a recipient but for any SMS beyond that, the recipient needs to reply to you . Or else you will be blocked from sending SMS to that recipient.

Things to look upon:

As you should have noticed, there’s no touch of security in this service.Any anonymous Gtalk user can send an SMS to any random number. The only information shared with the recipient is the email address from which the SMS came (which can be easily created/impersonated).So be ready for some weird SMSs from crazy users.
